Paving Installation Process

Here's Exactly What Happens

First, we excavate to the proper depth based on your soil conditions and intended use. This isn’t guesswork – the depth matters for long-term stability.

Next comes base preparation with the right materials, properly compacted in lifts. This is where most problems start if it’s done wrong, so we don’t rush this step.

Then we install edge restraints to keep everything in place, add and level the sand base, and install your pavers according to the pattern you chose. Finally, we sweep in joint sand and compact everything together.

The whole process typically takes 2-4 days depending on size and complexity. We clean up completely each day because we know you still need to use your driveway and entrance.

Quality pavers installed with proper base preparation easily last 20-30 years in Massachusetts weather. The key is using pavers rated for freeze-thaw cycles and ensuring proper drainage underneath. Concrete pavers are particularly durable here because they’re designed to handle temperature fluctuations. The base preparation matters more than the pavers themselves – a properly installed base prevents the shifting and settling that cause most problems. With minimal maintenance like occasional joint sand replacement, your pavers will look good for decades.
Concrete pavers are manufactured to exact specifications and offer more color and pattern options. They’re also more consistent in size and typically less expensive than clay brick pavers. Brick pavers have a classic look and are extremely durable, but they’re more limited in color options and cost more. Both handle New England weather well when properly installed. For most Mattapan homeowners, concrete pavers offer the best combination of durability, appearance options, and value. The installation process is identical regardless of which material you choose.
Paver installation typically costs $12-20 per square foot installed, depending on the paver type, site conditions, and project complexity. A typical 12×16 patio runs $2,300-3,800 including materials and labor. Driveway costs vary based on size and access, but expect $15-25 per square foot for most residential driveways. The base preparation and excavation requirements affect pricing more than the pavers themselves. We provide written estimates that break down all costs so you know exactly what you’re paying for before work begins.
Most paver patios and walkways don’t require permits in Mattapan, but driveways and projects affecting drainage sometimes do. We handle permit applications when needed and know the local requirements. The permitting process typically takes 1-2 weeks and costs $50-200 depending on project scope. We’ll tell you upfront if permits are needed and factor that timeline into your project schedule. It’s always better to check than assume, especially for larger projects or those near property lines.
Properly installed pavers with correct base preparation shouldn’t shift or settle significantly. The key is excavating to appropriate depth, using the right base materials, and compacting everything properly. Most settling problems happen because the base wasn’t prepared correctly or wasn’t deep enough for the soil conditions. In Mattapan’s clay soils, proper drainage is especially important to prevent frost heave. We excavate deeper than minimum requirements and use proven base materials to prevent these issues. Minor settling in the first year is normal and easily corrected.
Paver maintenance is straightforward. Sweep regularly to prevent debris buildup, and rinse with a hose as needed. You’ll need to add joint sand every few years as it washes out naturally. For stains, use appropriate cleaners – avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the paver surface. In winter, use sand instead of salt when possible, though quality pavers handle road salt fine. Sealing isn’t necessary but can enhance color and make cleaning easier. We’ll show you proper maintenance techniques and recommend products that work well with your specific pavers.
